God placed the conscience into the very fiber of the human soul to be an automatic warning system that tells us. “Pull up, pull up” before we crash and burn. When we understand what the conscience is for, we can appreciate that it is one of the greatest gifts God has given us.


It was there that I witnessed the scourge of leprosy for the first time. Leprosy is a disease that makes it impossible for the person affected to feel pain. I saw men and women without feet and hands. It had been my understanding that the disease destroys the extremities. But that is not so. The disease simply takes away the sensation of pain, and without pain its victims cannot tell when they are injuring their hands and feet. It helped me understand how the conscience is the moral organ of pain. A person who ignores their conscience or seeks to do away with it will sooner or later end up badly disfigured morally and eventually made lose their soul.
